Recommended Content Creators

This is a space to house information on content creators I follow and why I follow them. I will attempt to loosely group them up into areas of interest, though often times some of these creators will wander around between subjects instead of adhering strictly to a niche, so this isn't intended to be some guide that perfectly captures everything and I'll try to include detailed notes to give you more insight into what the channels or creators are about and if they're worth your time.

Category: Computers and Computing Technology

- Channel: Linus Tech Tips

Linus Tech Tips is pretty large and popular, but if you're not familiar with the channel, Linus really got his start at a decently large PC store chain called NCIX. The thing was he really enjoyed technology and showcasing new and interesting things, so he managed to convince the company to start a channel on YouTube to review products and such called NCIX Tech Tips. Eventually he would leave NCIX taking Luke along the way and strike out on his own creating his own channel and broadening his product focus. These days, Linus Media Group is a fairly large company with their core business still being product reviews and the likes, but they've also expanded into creating their own merchandise and running a lab to verify claims about various technology products.

As for my personal note on Linus Tech Tips as a media outlet to get information on technology, they do have a lot of excellent content whether it's stuff to better understand technology, deep dives on how certain components work, or other varied content, they have a little bit of everything though lack any particular focus. It's a good channel to get general information on computing technology or follow past projects to understand how you might go through a networking upgrade or such. That said, they typically don't get into the real extreme detail of how things work, especially when it comes to software, as it's not really their expertise as a media outlet and it's difficult to go over that kind of content and keep people interested. All in all, LTT is a good general place to check out with their many channels to get a solid all around grasp on computing technology and what's out there, especially if you're a standard user or even an enthusiast. If you're experienced with computing technologies, their channel is likely still interesting, but you may need to dig through their video archives to find things that will improve your knowledge and understanding.

- Channel: Gamers Nexus / GN Extras

Gamers Nexus as an outlet is significantly smaller than Linus Media Group, though that's a deliberate choice. Steve is the real founder and leader of their operation and he prefers working in a small team due to their ability to quickly change focus and manage projects in a more agile manner. Gamers Nexus focuses more on specific hardware components, like cases, processors, and GPUs and with that focus comes the ability to get significantly more detailed in pretty much every regard when compared against industry titans like Linus Media Group. These are what I would consider their competitive advantage when it comes to comparing them to others as a media outlet, and Steve seems to agree from past comments. One other important note on Gamers Nexus is that they originally started as an online publication, and have recently returned to those roots with an overhaul of their website, gamersnexus.net/.

My more personal note on Gamers Nexus is that if you're interested in gaming, Gamers Nexus does go out of its way to get as accurate benchmarks as they can when it comes to gaming and noise levels. Specifically, Gamers Nexus has a lot of pride in how they structure their tests and how thorough their review process is. They try to be candid about their testing methodologies so that you both have confidence in their results and can replicate them should you want to try things out yourself; they're significantly more structured in that regard than Linus Media Group (though LMG has thier own testing methods that are improving with the creation of their lab). Gamers Nexus also does factory tours and will walk through technologies in significantly more detail than Linus Media Group. In that regard, they have content that can appeal to people interested in PCs for gaming specifically or an audience more interested in the inner workings of the technology they use, more so than LTT in my biased opinion. With that said, I'd generally recommend Gamers Nexus regardless of your current depth of knowledge of computers because their content is narrow enough focus that you can get a solid understand of the topics they frequent but varied enough that they have content that can appeal to novice and experienced viewers alike.

- Channel: Level1Techs / Level1Linux

Unfortunately I'm not particularly well versed in the history behind Level1Techs, so I don't have too terribly much to note about the operation behind the channel. One thing I can note with confidence is that the main faces of the channel, Wendell, Krista, and Ryan do actual IT consulting work (such as helping Steve build an engine to better upkeep the Gamers Nexus site and recovering LMG's "vault" after they suffered excessive bit rot). One of the somewhat unique things about Level1Techs compared against LTT or Gamers Nexus is that they cover news; typically it's news related to technology in some way, but they do cover important happenings in government and discuss the ways in which these choices may influence the technology landscape.
